Iron Pulse Portal
Tea ceremony in a quiet tatami room

Higashiyama, Kyoto

A place to sit with tea

Iron Pulse Portal opens the door to Japanese tea ceremony — slowly, without hurry. Come as a guest. Leave with something that settles.

What we offer

Tea as it was intended — unhurried, attentive, present

In the tea room, there is no schedule pressing on you. Each gathering at Iron Pulse Portal is shaped around the season, the guests, and the particular quality of that afternoon's light. We prepare matcha, set a sweet beside it, and invite you to receive both with open hands.

Whether you have never held a tea bowl before or you have been drawn to chanoyu for years, there is a place for you here. The ceremony does not demand perfection — only a willingness to be still.

What you will find here

Each visit is its own quiet occasion

Authentic tatami setting

All gatherings take place in a traditional room in Gionmachi Minamigawa, unchanged in its arrangement and atmosphere. There is no performance here — only the ceremony as it is practised.

Seasonal wagashi and matcha

Each sitting includes sweets chosen for the month. The pairing of wagashi and matcha shifts with the seasons, as it has for centuries. You taste not only the tea but the time of year.

Gentle, patient guidance

Our host speaks slowly and welcomes questions at any point. No prior knowledge is expected. The etiquette introduced is the etiquette of a guest — simple, considerate, and easy to hold.

How a gathering unfolds

From the garden gate to the final bow

01

Arrive and settle

You are welcomed at the entrance and guided to the tea room. There is a moment to leave the street behind before anything begins.

02

Receive the sweet

A seasonal wagashi is placed before you. It prepares the palate and marks the shift from ordinary time to tea time.

03

Watch and then hold

Your host prepares the bowl. You are shown how to receive it, turn it, and drink — and there is no rush in any of this.

04

Sit and ask

After the tea, there is time to speak with your host, ask about the utensils, and remain with the atmosphere for as long as you wish.

Each gathering kept intimate
so the pace stays personal

"The room was quiet in a way I had not expected in the middle of Kyoto. The host did not rush a single movement. I drank the tea slowly and felt, for an hour, entirely elsewhere."

— Maren Solbakk, Oslo, April 2025
